I wrote this in response to the motion from the Student Committee of the University of
Melbourne ‘‘UMSU Stands with Palestine – BDS and Solidarity Policy’’ of 29 April 2022
and the Academic Solidarity Statement published in Overland Blog. Rather than rather naive and offensive statements about who and what is a Jew, the reality of Zionism as a diverse, not unitary ideology has to be accepted. Otherwise, we are on the slippery slope of the kind of rejectionist and violent outcomes pursued by George Habash and the PLFP. I also quote Ran Greenstein here: “…we must recognize that over the years an Israeli-Jewish national identity has developed alongside a Palestinian-Arab national identity, and each can serve as a foundation for the right to self-determination on an equal basis, as a starting point towards solving the issue on all its aspects.”
